I used to think that resolutions were strictly for January, that we only got one shot each year to set new goals. To make our “new year’s resolution”, but I’ve come to realize that it’s never too late to refocus and make choices that contribute to a better version of ourselves. Even if that means failing at something, but then bouncing back and trying again. Sometimes, it’s essential to pause and ask, “What small steps can I take right now to support my well-being?” For me, I have realized it’s all about setting intentional, manageable goals that align with who I want to become, both personally and professionally.
Rather than waiting for the calendar to reset, I’m choosing to end this year with a sense of purpose by setting new goals that feel meaningful. Each of these intentions is grounded in self-care, growth, and staying connected to what truly matters. I hope these goals inspire you to pursue your own priorities, no matter where you are in the year. So here is a list of things I want to focus on for the rest of the year, and I am going to try to keep a promise to myself on making these happen. :)
1. The GMAT Grind: Giving It My Best
December is just around the corner, which means the GMAT is too! With graduate school applications for Fall 2025 approaching, I’m eager to make my goal of starting a master’s program right after my bachelor’s a reality. Balancing work and my exchange program have made GMAT prep a challenge, but this goal feels important enough to prioritize fully. I’m aiming for a score of 700, ambitious but achievable with focus and commitment. Over the next few weeks, I’m dedicating three hours daily to study, focusing on practice tests, learning from mistakes, and homing in on areas that need improvement. My goal is to walk into the test feeling fully prepared and confident. Knowing that this effort could lead to exciting opportunities in master’s programs makes the hard work both purposeful and incredibly rewarding.
2. Prioritizing Health: Nutritious Choices with a Balanced Approach
Like many, I want to end the year feeling healthier and more energized. For me, that starts with my diet, adding more fruits, vegetables, and protein to my meals. Eating well is an important part of my goal to feel more fuelled for the day, have better energy levels, and potentially get into better shape with some definition. Yet, nutrition and health is also about striking a balance. Being in China has introduced me to many new foods, and I don’t want to miss out on those experiences. So, rather than restrictive eating and following a strict plan, I’m focusing on mindful choices that support my health 80% of the time. Taking care of myself now will positively impact my energy, focus, and overall well-being long term.
3. Financial Discipline: Building Healthy Money Habits
Becoming more intentional with money is a big focus for me as the year wraps up. I’ll admit, I often spend impulsively, so I’m setting a daily budget and aiming to think more carefully before each purchase. My goal is to build the habit of saving, which I know will help me down the line when I start working toward bigger goals, like buying property or a car. Cooking at home or choosing budget-friendly options like the school canteen are small but impactful changes. Ultimately, it’s about creating a financial foundation that allows me to feel secure and well prepared for future investments.
4. Strengthening Connections: Staying in Touch with Loved Ones
As someone living far from home, it’s easy to get caught up in the busyness of life abroad. However, I want to make a more intentional effort to connect with family and friends in Ontario and Vancouver, even if it’s just a quick text or call. These relationships are incredibly valuable to me, and staying connected helps me feel grounded, even from afar. Whether it’s sharing updates or simply checking in, I want my loved ones to know that they’re on my mind and close to my heart. I think being on exchange so far, I have lacked maintain proper interaction with those that matter most, so I want to turn that around for the remaining time I am away from home.
Closing Thoughts: Embracing Progress, Not Perfection
If this year has taught me anything, it’s that small, consistent efforts create the most lasting impact. Resolutions aren’t about radical reinvention, but about steady progress toward a better self. As we approach the end of the year, I’m excited to keep working on goals that feel aligned and meaningful. And if you’re waiting for the “right time” to make a change, remember that any time can be the right time. The best time is now! Let’s finish strong and start the new year with a renewed sense of purpose.
